The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang sells 100% at Christie's Hong Kong

On 10 October Christie's offered "The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang" at The Henderson in Hong Kong, the opening sale of the 60th anniversary of its Wine & Spirits Department. Over 800 lots sold in full after 13 hours of bidding, for a total of HK$50,212,875 (including buyer's premium), with around 80% of lots selling above their high estimates. The top lot was a magnum of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 1971 at HK$875,000. Henri Jayer, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Leroy were the standouts; Christie's said almost half of the buyers were Millennials or Gen Z, and close to 70% of them were new buyers.

Our view: A wine’s condition is an important factor in determining its market value. Bottles that have been well stored and have sound provenance tend to command stronger prices, while even minor flaws can have a meaningful impact on value. For collectible wines, finding a genuine bargain can be difficult; careful assessment of condition, provenance and price remains essential.
